HEALTHY SCHOOLS/YSGOLION IACH

Healthy Schools is an initiative which allows our children to become healthy, capable and ethical citizens. The award is split into seven areas: Food and Fitness; Safety; Hygiene; Mental and Emotional Health and Well-Being; Substance use and Misuse and Relationships and Personal Developments. Each of these areas are incorporated and encapsulated by all the daily habits, routines and of course, the curriculum that is delivered. Here at Narberth, we love to trial new initiatives which give our children the best opportunity to experience these seven areas thus allowing our children to be healthy individuals.  :

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been imperative to ensure the mental health and well-being of our children and staff is healthy and ready to settle back into a routine. In our school, we ensure that every child has an opportunity to speak with the class to share any news they may have as well as having the opportunity to have time to talk with an adult if they would prefer. A classroom is open during lunch time with a support member of staff present for wellbeing activities such as board games and colouring. This is called the ‘Lloches Lles/Wellbeing Den’ and is used as a space to support all learners.

We use the app ‘Speakr’ to complete daily check-in sessions in school where we are able to gauge how the children are feeling in themselves. The children are able to message their teacher privately about any worries or problems they may have. Our teachers ensure the children have peer interactions not only during their break times but within collaborative lesson times and during their lunch when eating. It is crucial that children have these times to socialise and bond together.

A key aspect of our school’s approach that supports the mental health and wellbeing of all pupils in Narberth school is the use of circle time and class assemblies. This learning is supported by the programmes KIVA and SEAL. These provide a structure for teaching and learning, embodying the emphasis of keeping our minds and our bodies healthy. This has been implemented into the school and is incorporated into our weekly routine as well as in many lessons as a tool for the children to learn about and reflect upon.

At Narberth School, we work hard to promote ourselves as an active, healthy school full of energetic children with an admiration to persevere. The school has an array of sports clubs after school which promotes the importance to keep healthy and try something new! We are fortunate with our school’s close proximity to the local swimming pool. Year groups from year 2 to year 6 have allocated sessions during the year which are taught on a Thursday morning. Children and staff usually walk up and back to the swimming pool which further supports our aim to be a Healthy School.
